What are Soundbubbles?
We all know soap bubbles – delicate, iridescent and short lived.
Now imagine a similar bubble that, when burst, emits music, noises, words or other small audio snippets.
You can “program” the bubble with any sound you wish.
The bubbles can hold sound for up to 5 seconds in length.
For example, ‘Happy Birthday’, ‘Will you marry me’, ‘Get off my property’ or the hammering beginning of Beethovens 5th symphony would fit comfortably.
All you have to do is gently burst the bubble, and the content will be audible.
Also, the bubbles can be flavoured and coloured (in digital pro-version only, see below). This way they appeal to smell and vision as well and enhance the experience considerably.
The bubbles are produced by our Soundbubble-Maker© device which is easy to set up, to use and compatible with all common audio formats.
A Soundbubble-Maker© is the ideal gift, a novelty messenger, Christmas tree decoration, harmless prank or just a quirky idea for entertaining friends and family.
It will be a great addition to any party, disco or concert and even to art installations.
How does it work?
The basic principle exists already and is called acoustic levitation (see video below).
A bubble is produced by using a high-frequency sound wave. We have further developed this principle and enhanced it with a process called “audio osmosis” (patent pending).
It means that a small bubble is produced inside the device and then injected with the sound via audio osmosis.
The bubble mix is made from water, saponins (the soapy part) and tiny amounts of silicone to give it more flexibility and durability.
All components are natural, non-allergic, have no side effects and are bio-degradable.
The bursting bubble will simply disintegrate into its watery components.
It is perfectly safe to use indoors and with children and pets.
Nevertheless, it is not advised to inhale or swallow the bubbles in significant numbers.
The Bubbles
They are 5-6cm in diameter, and their appearance is slightly iridescent-opaque.
Once released the bubble will slightly expand and last between 5 – 20 seconds, depending on the surrounding conditions (temperatures should be between 0°C-35°C, does not work in the rain).
Each bubble can hold sound snippets for up to 5 seconds.
To hear the audio content you simply burst it with your finger or any other pointy object.
The sound emitted from the bubbles is clear, medium volume and audible to people within one metre of the “detonation”.
The digital version of the Soundbubble-Maker© can produce bubbles in various colours and inject them with smells as well.
1. Colour
All prime and secondary colours are standard (red, yellow, blue + green, purple, orange).
Other shades are available on request in customised batches (minimum order is 100 cartridges).
2. Smell
We can infuse the bubble mix with almost any available aroma, as long it is available in a non-oil based, non-toxic version.
For example for an ice cream shop opening, we could create bubbles mixes for the main flavours of vanilla, strawberry and chocolate in the corresponding colours.
The Soundbubble-Maker©
This is the device that creates the bubbles and has the size of a small shoe box.
It comes with a USB port and a wireless connector to program it and feed it with the audio files. Currently, it supports the following formats: wav, mp3, wma, ogg.
All versions of the Soundbubble-Maker© can produce a bubble every 3 seconds (= 20 per minute or 1200 per hour).
A cartridge with the bubble mix is included. When it has run out, you can easily replace it, similar to an inkjet printer.
The cartridge holds 100ml which is enough for up to 3000 bubbles. The mix can be reordered online or bought in all participating stores.
All Soundbubble-Maker© devices can produce bubbles without the audio inside if required.
There are currently 3 types of Soundbubble-Maker© available.
1. Basic version
Allows injecting one audio file at the time in as many bubbles as you like.
2. Extended version
For up to 100 audio files. You can decide in which order the files are played (works similar to the memory function in a car radio).
3. Digital Pro-version
This one is slightly bigger and powered by a customised Raspberry Pi (Linux based – like a small computer).
You can program it with an unlimited amount of sound files which can be played in any order or sequence.
The Pro-version can also produce bubbles in different colours and aromas (frequency decreases to a bubble every 5 seconds, 12 per minute, 720 per hour).
You can have sound, colour and smell or any combinations thereof.
Another feature is the integrated light machine. It will allow you to connect the sound to a light console and play both in unison.
The digital Soundbubble-Maker© is aimed at the commercial market.
There are also service stations that rent it out because it might not always be feasible to invest in a device when you want to use it only once or sporadically.
The Future sounds bright
In the near future, we will release a version with two tanks and two bubble making mechanisms to allow seamless operation for as long as desired.
There are also plans to construct a similar device for underwater bubbles. They emit their sound when coming up to the water surface and could be used in aquariums, ponds, fountains or any other water settings.
Happy Bubble Making
